Character Villa Renovation & Restoration
You Build transformed this turn-of-the-century villa in Brightwater, Nelson-Tasman, with a comprehensive character home renovation focused on restoring its original charm while improving comfort, durability and modern functionality.
A key part of the project was the complete replacement of the timber rusticated weatherboards, carefully reinstating the traditional appearance of the original villa while providing a renewed exterior envelope. The home was also re-roofed, giving the property a fresh, durable roof and completing the exterior restoration.
Throughout the villa, new timber joinery and traditional detailing were introduced, including colonial architraves, timber linings and detailed timber corners. These elements were designed to complement the existing architecture and maintain the proportions and character expected of a classic New Zealand villa.
Inside, the renovation combines period character with contemporary living. A new fireplace provides a focal point and warmth, while double glazing improves insulation, comfort and energy efficiency without compromising the villa’s traditional appearance.
The kitchen was completely renewed, creating a practical modern space within the character home. Tiled bathrooms provide contemporary functionality while maintaining the quality and timeless feel of the renovation.
A new 30m² villa-style garage was designed to complement the original house, extending the property’s functionality without appearing out of place. Matching architectural details help the garage sit naturally alongside the restored villa.
Outside, a timber pergola and Kwila decking create an inviting connection between the home and garden, providing a dedicated outdoor living and entertaining area.
